Keeping your home healthy and safe

Mould and condensation can affect both your health and your home. This factsheet explains what causes them, how to prevent problems, and what to do if mould appears.

Condensation happens when warm, moist air touches a cold surface (like a wall or window), forming water droplets.

You’ll often notice it:

  • After a hot shower
  • While cooking
  • When using a clothes dryer

Too much condensation can lead to mould and can cause property damage.

Mould is a tiny fungus that:

  • Can look fuzzy or furry
  • Is usually black or green
  • Grows on walls, ceilings, furniture, and clothes
  • Can damage your home and affect your health

Preventing condensation is one of the best ways to stop mould from growing.

  • Open windows and doors daily (when safe) to let fresh air in
  • Use exhaust fans while cooking or showering
  • Leave space behind furniture to allow air to circulate
  • Avoid overfilling wardrobes and rooms to keep air flowing
  • Dry clothes outdoors or in a well-ventilated area
  • Use a fan or heater to keep air moving, especially in colder months

Consistent airflow and moisture control are important.

Mould can spread fast, especially in damp or poorly ventilated areas. If it’s not treated early, it can damage your home and become harder to remove. It can also affect your health, especially if you have asthma, allergies, or other breathing issues.

If you notice mould starting to grow, act straight away. The sooner it is cleaned or reported, the easier it is to manage.

Natural options like white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, or tea tree oil are often safer and more effective for small areas.

You can find mould cleaning sprays at supermarkets but be careful as many only mask the problem and don’t kill mould completely.

Tips

  • Wear gloves and a mask for protection
  • Make a natural cleaning spray:
  • Mix 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil with 1 cup of water
  • Or use white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda
  • Spray the affected area and let it sit for a few minutes
  • Wipe clean with a disposable cloth or paper towel
