What we do

Mission Australia's integrated services work together to reduce homelessness and strengthen communities across Australia, by helping people secure jobs, receive an education, find housing and develop important life skills.  Early intervention and prevention is at the heart of our work.

We begin by taking a close look at the root causes of a person’s predicament, and strive to stop problems from spiralling out of control and affecting other areas of their life. By addressing issues early, we have the best chance of breaking the cycle of disadvantage. Our approach is strengthened by 155 years of real-world experience and knowledge.

Mission Australia have a long history of working with government at all levels, as both a service provider and influencer. The majority of services we deliver are government-funded, through a transparent tender process to secure contracts. If successful, we receive funds from the government – in some cases, from a combination of state and federal bodies – to operate each service for a determined period.

Research & evaluation

Mission Australia draws on our expert knowledge, gained from many years of experience and research findings, to bring about real and lasting change both on a personal and systemic level. We also suggest better solutions to entrenched problems to better position our leadership in the sector.

Policy development and advocacy

Mission Australia work with governments as they develop policies that impact the people we assist, and our senior staff regularly take part in state and territory government advisory committees and working groups, and provide input on social policy through submissions to government. We also work alongside community and advocacy groups, other not-for-profit organisations and businesses across the nation to stand up for people in need across Australia.

Homelessness & social housing support

Although getting people into affordable housing is a priority, there’s more to it than that. At Mission Australia we try to understand what has caused a person or family to become homeless. Then, bit-by-bit, we help them to address the underlying causes and break the cycle of homelessness.

Alcohol, drugs and dependencies support

Our community services also work with families to help them deal with those challenges that can tear people apart, such as problem gambling, domestic violence, drug and alcohol issues and long-term unemployment.

Mental well-being and disability support

Mission Australia offers a range of support to assist people with mental illness. This includes making sure sufferers are in contact with the right support agencies, and helping them to break down personal barriers, reduce feelings of isolation and increase life skills. Raising a child with a disability, chronic health condition or learning difficulties can be hard on a family. Without someone to lean on, it can take a heavy physical, emotional and financial toll.

Employment, skills & training

For decades Mission Australia has been helping people of all ages who have experienced barriers to employment – be it educational, personal or health-related – to gain the skills and confidence to find and keep a job. Our dedicated teams work closely with government, businesses and training organisations across the nation to change lives, families and communities through employment.

Youth services

Mission Australia provides youth services across the nation that support young men and women as they journey towards adulthood. Using our research, we develop and deliver support services, and stand up for young people.

Families & children services

At the heart of our work is early intervention and prevention, which means we address issues before they become major setbacks for families. We support mums and dads to be the very best parents they can be.
