Overview

Mission Australia is calling on all political parties and candidates to prioritise bold, compassionate policy solutions that address Australia’s housing crisis, eliminate poverty, and deliver targeted support for young people. Drawing on the organisation’s frontline experience and national reach, this 2025 Election Platform identifies actions governments can take to drive systemic change and create a fair future for all.

3 Priority areas to secure a fair future

1. Everyone has a safe and affordable home where they can thrive

  • Significantly boost the number of social and affordable homes to 10% of all housing stock
  • Mandate a portion of affordable homes in all new large-scale developments
  • Create a $500 million Homelessness Prevention Transformation Fund

2. No one lives in poverty

  • Raise the rate of Jobseeker and income support to at least $82/day
  • Strengthen Commonwealth Rent Assistance to support those at risk
  • Legislate to end child poverty via the Measuring What Matters wellbeing framework

3. Young people facing adversity are not left behind

  • Fund 15,000 youth tenancies per year
  • Construct 10 Youth Foyers for housing, education, and employment pathways
  • Increase investment in alcohol and other drug services, including residential and aftercare

Why this matters

  • 160,520 people supported across 477 services and 4,550 homes (2023–24)
  • 23,441 people experiencing homelessness supported
  • Youth services in high demand across housing, mental health and recovery
  • Mission Australia housing demand up 19% in the last year
