Summary
A concise overview of Mission Australia’s place-based, community-led initiative and early learnings.
Mission Australia is partnering with local people to drive long-term, place-based change. This snapshot shares what’s working so far - how trust, shared governance and iterative learning are helping communities lead solutions that match local goals.
Key highlights
-
Community‑led, place‑based approaches are critical to tackle entrenched disadvantage and improve outcomes in specific locations.
- Relationships matter: progress moves at “the speed of trust” and requires deep, diverse engagement.
-
Build broad commitment and include people with lived experience in decision‑making.
-
There’s no one‑size‑fits‑all and no fixed timeline—governance and stakeholders evolve as the work matures.
-
Balance backbone support with community autonomy to maintain momentum, particularly at transition points.
-
Use developmental evaluation with regular learning cycles to adapt as new evidence emerges.
We’re supporting Communities of Focus in:
- Cairns South, QLD (since 2020)
- Maddington, WA (since 2022)
- Meekatharra, WA (since 2022)
Our aim is to commence in two additional communities by 2025.
What “place‑based” means: a collaborative, long‑term approach in a defined location with shared design, stewardship and accountability.
Backbone role: Mission Australia works with community through a community‑led governance structure over ten years, progressing five stages of growth (Establishing, Initiating action, Reviewing & refining, Growing impact, Transitioning to independence).
We take a multi‑layered approach to measure enabling conditions, local initiatives and system‑level change—embedding regular reflection and action cycles. Key time‑points:
- Design & early implementation (≈Years 1.5–2)
- Implementation & early outcomes (Years 3–4)
- Outcomes & early impact (Years 4–6+)
- Impact & transition (Years 9–10).
Cairns South Together (CST)
Built momentum via asset mapping, a shared identity (“nothing about us without us”) and a Theory of Change focused on the first 1,000 days and adolescents’ foundations.
Meekatharra
Six months of listening returned to community through a locally owned visual summary; Elders invited COF to commence in 2022; ongoing activities and a shared vision guide next steps.
