Summary
This research examines the long-term impact of Mission Australia's homelessness services in Cairns. The study drew on interviews with people one to five years after leaving a service, as well as service data and existing evidence.
Key Findings
The research found that Mission Australia's services help people access and sustain independent housing, with many remaining housed years after leaving a service. People reported improved health, safety, wellbeing, independence and cultural connections after securing stable housing. Key service elements included person-centred support, outreach, Indigenous mentors and multidisciplinary support such as healthcare and practical life skills development. The research also identified the need for greater investment in ongoing tenancy support after people move into housing, therapeutic services and supported housing options, alongside strengthening public housing settings.
