A child’s nightmare
Tom* and Ava* lost the last rental accommodation they could afford. They stood at the front of their old home with their four-year-old daughter Madison*, and baby Billy,* who was only a few months old.
Their car was the only option that night, and for many nights afterwards.
They slept in the car, changed Billy’s nappy and fed him in the car, and sometimes shared a loaf of bread for dinner. Ava says the worst thing was hearing Madison ask to “go home.”
Care for a family in crisis
The local Mission Australia centre became a place where Tom and Ava knew they could find support. Case workers like Deb* helped with food hampers, clothes for the children, and referrals to a housing agency. Donations from supporters like you brought practical help and emotional support into their lives.
Tom was constantly searching for affordable accommodation. Ava focused on making life as normal as possible for their children. She didn’t want them to be affected by the intense pressure their mum and dad were under.
They slept in the car, changed Billy’s nappy and fed him in the car, and sometimes shared a loaf of bread for dinner. Ava says the worst thing was hearing Madison ask to “go home.”
