When Carol’s* husband Tom* passed away unexpectedly, she not only lost her partner, but she lost her home too.
Tom had taken the lead in looking after the couple’s finances, and while they struggled, they got by. After his death, without enough savings or superannuation, Carol couldn’t afford the mortgage and ongoing bills on her own.
The death of her husband left Carol with no options; she was forced to sell her home. After paying off her outstanding debts she sought work as a hospital cleaner to make ends meet.
After months of rejected rental applications, Carol found herself without a safe place to call home, sleeping in a spare room at a local pub.
I thought this would be temporary but it’s starting to feel like forever. –Carol, 67 years old
Sadly, there are more than 6,000 women over 55 years without a safe place to call home.1
Just as we helped Carol, your support means we can continue to help other vulnerable people find a safe place to call home.
Please help other women like Carol at risk of homelessness this winter.
Often, the homeless are people you’d least expect.
Older women without sufficient superannuation are vulnerable to unexpected events such as the death of a loved one or a health crisis. Without support, they are at risk of homelessness later in life.
Women over the age of 55 are the fastest growing group of people seeking assistance from homelessness services.1 Your generosity this winter can help provide an older person with:
Emergency accommodation and essential items
Essential case management and wraparound support to break the cycle of homelessness
Transition to permanent homes and support to live independently.
If you or someone you know is experiencing loneliness or anxiety, please reach out to your GP, a counsellor or call Beyond Blue on 1300 22 46 36.
