We are deeply saddened by the terrible impact of the bushfires on many communities across Australia. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, including those who are working tirelessly to save lives, livelihoods and communities.

It’s a reminder of the fragility of life and the powerful effect of standing together in times of great need. As we’ve witnessed, particularly during a crisis – homelessness comes in many forms. These past weeks and months you will have heard of it, seen it or may have even experienced it yourself. People sleeping rough. In cars. Emergency shelters. Crowding with relatives. Even staying with complete strangers. Hoping to be able to return home unscathed. Sadly, for many this hasn’t been the case.

Mission Australia is not a disaster relief organisation, but we provide vital community services across Australia and support people and families experiencing disadvantage and homelessness - including in the bushfire-affected communities where we work. In some locations our offices have been transformed into evacuation centres. In others our staff are rolling up their sleeves and volunteering on top of their normal work for Mission Australia. Irrespective, our team is getting on with helping the people and communities who are relying on us.

If you want to support immediate disaster relief, the most effective way is to donate directly to an official disaster relief charity.

As a nation, we face major challenges ahead to ensure we create hope and opportunity for those in greatest need. We know that once the fires are extinguished and the drought finally breaks, recovery will take time. But with your support we’re up for the task.
