Housing and homelessness

Mission Australia’s submission focused on the thematic directions and focused on the need to increase social and affordable housing, increasing housing options across homelessness continuum, trauma informed service delivery and catering for the diverse needs of different groups such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, older women, young people and families and the like.

The NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment are developing a Housing Strategy that is expected to be in place for the next 20 years. Our recommendations included the urgent need for government investment to increase social and affordable housing and more investment targeted at different cohorts including the ageing population.

The Centre for Social Impact, UWA and Mission Australia have developed a prototype Homelessness Solutions Model Framework. The aim of the Framework is to inform how Australian governments should allocate resources to end homelessness. It includes a typology of solutions to homelessness, along with data on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of each solution to draw conclusions about efficient expenditure

This report present the evidence Mission Australia has been gathering over the last three years, including rich data from our services, experiences of our practitioners and the voices of people with a lived experience of homelessness. It shows homelessness and stable housing support services have a critical role in ending homelessness and ensuring people in need can thrive, reinforces what is working well in practice and illustrates where urgent action is needed to end homelessness.

This snapshot present the key findings from Mission Australia’s Homelessness and Stable Housing Support Impact Report. It summarises the growing demand for homeliness services over the last three years, the impact of Mission Australia services, what works in practice and recommendations for urgent action to end homelessness. 

We made a submission to the Royal Commission into Aged Care on Aged Care Program Redesign focusing on the needs of older people who have experienced or at risk of homelessness, challenges experienced by diverse groups of people and those living in rural and remote areas.

Mission Australia is an experienced provider of Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) services. We work across the whole DFV spectrum and provide early intervention and prevention, crisis accommodation and specialist services as well as sector advocacy. This is our submission to the NSW Domestic and Family Violence Blueprint For Reform.

We welcome the City of Sydney’s draft social sustainability policy and look forward to the development of the Action Plan. In particular we support the focus on improved well-being, equity of access to opportunity and reducing the gap between rich and poor so everyone thrives. We believe that Affordable Housing should be a priority for the City of Sydney and have focused our submission on housing and homelessness as well as strengthening communities.

Mission Australia welcomes the NSW Government's commitment to preventing and responding to domestic and family violence. We support perpetrator programs to break the cycle of violence, alongside much needed services for women, children and other family members affected by domestic and family violence.

Mission Australia’s submission to the Foundations for Change – Homelessness in NSW discussion paper calls for a new Commonwealth-State housing and homelessness agreement and more social and affordable housing in NSW. It also calls for health and social service agencies to work more closely with specialist homelessness services to prevent and reduce homelessness.

This submission makes the recommendations to: invest in Housing First responses for those with more complex support needs; increase the stock of social housing available and suitable for older people; and commission new residential aged care facilities and better access to the NDIS for homeless older people.

This submission highlighted the urgent requirement for the South Australian government to increase investment in social and affordable homes through a long-term and sustainable strategy as well as the need for a diverse range of early intervention and prevention services across the state.

Mission Australia’s submission to the Federal House of Representatives Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs on homelessness in Australia highlighted a broad range of issues impacting different members of the community and made recommendations including significantly increasing the social and affordable housing stock across the country.

Our submission to this inquiry by the Victorian Legal and Social Issues Committee emphasised on the growing need to significantly increase investment in social housing to meaningfully address housing and homelessness related issues in Victoria.

This submission advocates the adoption of the tools developed by the Constellation Project, which Mission Australia is a founding member, that would increase the supply of housing that is affordable for people on low to moderate incomes. Two of the tools recommended would facilitate inclusionary zoning and a funding mechanism which would incentivise and drive private investment into social and affordable housing.

This submission focused on the need to integrate training and education about respectful, trauma informed and culturally sensitive training to a range of government officials. It also highlighted that in order to meaningfully address the issues of people experiencing homelessness in public places, there needs to be an increase in social and affordable housing in NSW.

Mission Australia’s submission to the Tasmanian House of Assembly Select Committee on Housing Affordability focuses on the need for significant progress on reducing homelessness and investment in social and affordable housing to achieve this goal.
