Reconnect is funded by the Dept. of Social Services (DSS). The community-based program supports young people aged 12 - 18 who are risk of becoming homeless, homeless, or experiencing family conflict, living in or attending school in the Southern Onkaparinga catchment area in South Australia. Reconnect aims to prevent homelessness by providing individual and family counselling, mediation and support to stabilize accommodation, with a strong emphasis on family reconciliation and community engagement. Young people can self-refer or be referred by anyone with links to the young person including family members; friends; schools; police and youth justice; housing and accommodation services; Centrelink; and other community services.

The young people that Reconnect works with face a variety of issues including:

  • Unstable accommodation and housing
  • Poverty and financial hardship
  • Domestic violence and family crisis
  • Alcohol and drug abuse
  • Parental unemployment
  • Disengagement from education
  • Mental and physical health issues
  • Challenges of being a newly arrived refugee, and a survivor of torture and trauma.

The program ensures young people and their families are provided with access to a wide variety of networks and services to support their needs including:

  • Education programs and services
  • Centrelink and employment services
  • Housing and accommodation services
  • Life skills development programs
  • Mental health and health support and services
  • Parenting support, education programs and services.
  • Who we assist

    We assist young people who are aged 12 - 18 years who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and their families.

    Eligibility criteria

    To access Reconnect, you must be 12-18 years living in Onkaparinga region and be homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

    Referral process

    We receive referrals through internal and external agencies such as schools, families, SAPOL, justice, Department for Child Protection, Centrelink and self.
