Mission Australia’s pre-budget submission focuses on the need for significant progress on homelessness and affordable housing, the need for adequate funding for evidence-based programs that have a positive impact on people’s lives and the imperative that the most vulnerable Australians not bear the brunt of budget savings measures.

Mission Australia’s pre-budget submission focuses on the need for significant progress on homelessness and affordable housing and the need for adequate funding for evidence-based programs that have a positive impact on people’s lives and support them on their journey to independence. This includes investment in child safety and youth programs, ensuring adequate mental health and drug and alcohol supports and strengthening communities of entrenched and persistent disadvantage.

The recommendations in our pre-budget submission are designed to ensure that the 2018-19 budget measures work to reduce homelessness and strengthen communities across Australia including through the supply of affordable housing, addressing gaps in services delivery, investing in evidence-based programs and supporting community development.

The supplementary submission highlighted a number of concerns including the need to increase social and affordable housing through a stimulus package, permanently increase the base rate of social security payments by $185 a week and supports for people experiencing domestic and family violence.

Our Pre-budget Submission focused on increasing investment to address homelessness, increasing income support payment base rate permanently, strengthening communities, young people’s mental health and the need to support community services by incorporating the existing rate of Equal Remuneration Order supplementation to funding contracts.

Ahead of the 2022 Federal election, we need leaders who will take urgent action to tend to immediate needs as well as safeguard our communities against future crises. We have outlined our key policy recommendations across seven priority areas including: housing and homelessness; aged care; income support; strengthening communities; support for young Australians, Self Determination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; and climate change.
