Mission Australia was largely supportive of the proposed amendments outlined in the Bill including limiting the time young people spend in custody before being brought before the Children’s court, the emphasis on detention as a last resort and increased connection between the education and justice systems will improve the outcomes for young people.

The submission also highlights service models that are effective in supporting young people to get back on track through education, employment and cultural connection.

As many of our justice services work with young people, this submission takes a particular focus on early intervention and diversion programs for young people.
