Getting upskilled

Not everyone discovers their passion at an early age, but Dhiren Patel, a 34-year-old from Perth living with Autism, knew his passion for computers was unwavering.

"I have always wanted to study computers and also have an interest in computer games."

After finishing high school, Dhiren was eager to learn more about computers. Dhiren enrolled in IT Networking at TAFE and pursued Cyber Security at Edith Cowan University in Perth.

Throughout this time, the Perth local continued to work. While he was grateful to have a job, he wanted to upskill in his desired career path.

“For the past 16 years, I gained skills in packaging but didn’t get to learn much about computer related skills which relates to my studies at university.”

“I will be finishing my degree at the end of this year and graduate at the beginning of 2023. I have been able to learn and interact with people from different cultural background, learn to work in a team environment and meeting deadlines."

Dhiren stands at a computer desk with a smile on his face.

Support for the journey ahead

Everything changed when Dhiren had a conversation with his Mission Australia NDIS Local Area Coordinator (LAC), Beth about his options. Thanks to Beth's guidance and support, Dhiren connected with Exceptional Disability Service, a provider dedicated to assisting individuals with disabilities in achieving their career aspirations.

“With Beth’s help, we were able to find Exceptional Disability Service...My support provider Kim was able to help with my resume, cover letters and job applications each week. I was able to secure interviews with Centre for Accessibility, Water Corporation, Deloitte Touche and many others.”

After all his determination and with the right support, Dhiren was successful with his interview at the Centre for Accessibility and has started a new role as a Junior Digital Accessibility Analyst, which involves creating and testing out websites for vision impaired users.

"For the first time, I am doing a job that I like, and I know I will grow as a person and in my career."

He is delighted to be following his dreams and grateful for the support from Mission Australia.

A future full of passion

Filled with joy and gratitude, Dhiren acknowledges the unwavering support he received from Beth, who played a crucial role in connecting him with the right resources and opportunities.

He expresses deep appreciation for being able to pursue a job he genuinely loves, knowing that it will enable him to thrive as an individual and progress in his chosen career path.

Dhiren Patel's journey serves as an inspiration to all those facing obstacles in achieving their dreams.
