Helping older women find safe homes
At 64, Susan faced one of the toughest challenges of her life – homelessness.
Sadly, Susan is part of a rising number of older women who have spent their lives caregiving, working low-paid jobs, and navigating financial hardships—only to find themselves vulnerable without a safe place to call home.
She's not alone. More women over 55 are facing challenges after a lifetime of inequality.
Did you know?
One in seven or 19,378 people who are homeless are over 55 years old, an increase of 4% over the past five years.1
What causes homelessness in older women?
Many older people like Susan can experience homelessness for the first time later in life triggered by unforeseen factors that contribute to financial instability. Unexpected life events, relationship breakdown or sudden illness are examples of unforeseen factors that can lead to financial instability. Learn more about what causes homelessness in older people.
The duo helping older women find a safe home
Fiona Terry and Janet Maher, from our Brisbane inner-city homelessness service, are passionate advocates for older women in need. They are pushing for lasting change by demanding a rethink of support systems and affordable housing for older women.
Janet and Fiona are part of a growing network of women who are calling for more tailored support services for older women experiencing homelessness.
Meet the women helping older women in need:
When Susan was placed in unsuitable housing, Fiona helped her navigate the system and advocate for her needs.
“I rang Fiona so many times and she was advocating for me with the department, and just sort of kept me going because I was so anxious about not getting it [housing],” says Susan.
“You were the help every step of the way, and there were some big steps and some hard times, and you were always there.”
Their work highlights an urgent need: dedicated services and policies that recognise the contributions and unique challenges of women who’ve given so much to our communities. Janet and Fiona want to see action on inequality, affordable housing for older women and an expansion of health and social wellbeing services.
