How do I make or change a Will?

We strongly encourage you to discuss your Will and wishes with your loved ones. This ensures you are well supported through the process and your wishes are met.

It’s best to consult with a solicitor to make your Will. However, if your Will doesn’t involve a complex estate, you may wish to consider using an online Will writing platform such as Gathered Here.

We know that traditional estate planning can be costly and time consuming but Mission Australia supporters who write a will via Gathered Here can do so for free, in a matter of minutes. Wills can also be updated, for free, as many times as you like.

What about changing a Will?

We recommend speaking with your solicitor to make any changes to your Will. Alternatively, if you have an online Will, you should be able to make amends through your chosen platform.

Is there a ‘best type’ of gift?

Most of our supporters choose to leave a ‘residual’ gift. This is a percentage of the remainder of your estate after loved ones have been taken care of. A residual gift holds its value over time and automatically adjusts to changes in the value of your estate, minimising the need to change your Will at various times. Even 1% of your estate, where your loved ones get 99%, will make an immense difference to Australians in need.

You can also choose to leave a specific dollar amount.

What wording should I use?

All your solicitor will need is our ABN (15 000 002 522) and our registered name (Mission Australia). If you are using Gathered Here to write your Will, these details will be automatically written in, should you choose to include a gift to us.

If you would like suggestions for specific wording, you can find it on our information for solicitors and executors page.

Do I have to tell you about my gift?

We appreciate some people may prefer to keep their intentions private. Your Will is very personal so it’s completely up to you whether you’d like to tell us, and we will respect your wishes.

If you choose to let us know, we can thank you properly and give you the opportunity to engage with Mission Australia in a way which suits you. You will also join a wonderful community as a member of the Benjamin Short Society, named after our founder and sustained by those who carry on his legacy (wonderful supporters like you). As a member, you will enjoy exclusive invitations to special events, visits to services and regular updates on the work we do which you make possible.
