WELCOME

Since starting my role as Mission Australia’s State Director for Queensland in March, I’ve been inspired by the uplifting stories about our services and programs. There are countless stories of vulnerable people in our communities receiving vital support from our dedicated team – people who once felt isolated, experienced homelessness or lived without necessities, accessed the support they needed to achieve their goals, find hope and gain confidence for the future.

I’m grateful for the incredible support we have received from the community, business sector, government and through our collaborations across the sector.  Together, we have assisted 24,071 people in QLD through 45 services that help vulnerable people escape homelessness and thrive.

Despite the many challenges and constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic, I am grateful for the QLD team as they have continued to walk alongside and serve people in need.

We responded to the significant impact of COVID for the homeless, ensuring their access to safe, secure accommodation and tailored support services. This included moving our residents from Roma House in Brisbane into COVID-safe accommodation in collaboration with Bric Housing.

We were proud to partner with other organisations as part of the ‘Town of Nowhere Campaign’, which resulted in the QLD Government announcing a record budget investment into social and affordable housing.

Over the past year, there have been many impactful stories. As you read some of these stories in our Annual Report, I hope you will also be inspired knowing that your support makes this possible.

Warm regards,

20-25 Strategy

In 2020, we launched Mission Australia’s 20-25 Strategy with a vision for an Australia where all of us have a safe home and can thrive. In the past year, we are proud of our progress in our four strategic areas of focus. From the construction of a new Mission Australia Centre in Coffs Harbour to expanding our Alcohol and Other Drugs Facilities in Cairns and Batemans Bay.

See our progress

Mission Australia stands together with Australians in need, until they can stand for themselves.

Thank you for making our work possible this year.

Ending homelessness

When Kristie learned about homelessness in Brisbane, she wanted to help. Alongside nine other hairstylists, she offered free haircuts to residents of Mission Australia’s Roma House. Roma House provides temporary accommodation for vulnerable people who have been homeless for over a year. Read how her act of kindness boosted their self-confidence.

Strengthening communities

In April 2021, Mission Australia's Hambledon House Community Centre celebrated its reopening with local children and families in Edmonton, Cairns. With activities and programs to foster social connectedness and support families in need, our staff were excited to meet over 350 visitors during its Open Day. Thanks for supporting the launch of Hambledon House Community Centre.

Driving excellence

Our Impact Measurement helps us understand how our services improve the lives of our clients and the communities we serve. We measure our impact by asking our clients questions about their wellbeing when they start a service and when they exit. Funded by the Queensland Government, our Going Places Street to Home Homeless Program (Going Places) helps people experiencing homelessness find long-term housing, through clinical health services and case management. Our impact measurement data shows that when individuals left the service, they were more satisfied with their life as a whole than at the start.

Research & advocacy

Mission Australia partnered with QCOSS and several other community service organisations on the ‘Town of Nowhere’ advocacy campaign, aimed at a commitment from the Queensland Government in its budget to new social housing.

  • The Queensland Government Budget announced a record investment of $1.9B to build and renew 6,365 social and affordable housing over four years.
  • The Queensland Government also announced the establishment of a $1 billion Housing Investment Fund to support current and future housing needs.
