Annual report QLD 2022
WELCOME
The need for Mission Australia’s services has increased significantly this year, as the most vulnerable people in Queensland have experienced the greatest impacts from continuation of COVID, extreme weather events, increasing cost of living pressures and reduced housing affordability during the year.
I am so grateful for how our staff and volunteers have stepped up and responded to help people and communities in need, and for the generous support of donors, funders and partnering organisations, to enable us to assist 21,841 Queenslanders.
There are so many wonderful achievements to celebrate over the year, and a few highlights include:
- New initiatives increasing the reach and impact of homelessness support services.
- Significant progress in construction of the alcohol and other drugs residential rehabilitation service in Cairns, due to open next year.
- Strengthening communities through a long-term funding commitment to our Community of Focus program in Cairns South and through Circles of Care programs in Cairns South and Inala.
- Renewed government funding for Intensive Family Support Services and new services such as the Youth Support Program in Mornington Island and Transition to Work program for youth in the Gold Coast region.
As you read some of the stories in our Annual Report, I know you will be inspired to know that your support counts, making a positive difference to the lives of so many in need.
Warm regards,
Together, we supported 21,841 Australians in QLD on their journey towards independence last year.

An Australia where all of us can have a safe home and thrive
In 2020, we launched Mission Australia’s 20-25 Strategy with a vision for an Australia where all of us have a safe home and can thrive. In the past year, we are proud of our progress in our four strategic focus areas. From the opening of the Mission Australia Centre in Coffs Harbour to expanding our Alcohol and Other Drugs Facilities in Batemans Bay, read more about our progress here.
Our work in action
Ending homelessness
For people with lived experiences of homelessness, finding a job can be a challenging first step. Thanks to our Café One team in Cairns, vulnerable Australians have an opportunity to gain vital life skills and employment experience. Learn how Café One helps break the cycle of homelessness, one coffee at a time.
Strengthening communities
Domestic and family violence (DFV) has devastating impacts on an individual’s self-esteem and mental health – many of which are difficult to spot on the surface. Our Hambledon House Community Centre provides families escaping DFV with the support they need to regain self-confidence and learn how to thrive.
Supporting people in need to thrive
In Inala, the generosity of Mission Australia supporters funds our Circles of Care program that helps children and their families through difficult times. Read how the program fulfilled Karen’s Christmas wish for her family.
Mission Australia stands together with Australians in need, until they can stand for themselves.
Thank you for making our work possible this year.
Driving excellence
Our Impact Measurement helps us understand how our services improve the lives of our the people we helpd and the communities we serve. We measure our impact by asking individuals questions about their wellbeing when they start a service and when they exit.
In QLD, our homelessness services provide support to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to ensure they have long-term stable housing. Our impact measurement data shows that when people left our services, they were more satisfied with their personal wellbeing.

Services include Douglas House (funded by the QLD State Government), Going Places Street to Home (funded by the QLD State Government), Roma House (funded by the QLD State Government), Sustaining Tenancies and Reconnect service (funded by the Federal Government).

Research & advocacy
Mission Australia provided submissions and presented evidence to the Federal Government and State and Territory Governments on a range of issues, including:
- The Productivity Commission’s review of the National Housing and Homelessness Agreement
- Federal pre-budget consultations
- The National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Their Children
- The new Disability Employment Services model
We continued to advocate for a national plan to end homelessness, further investment in social and affordable housing, adequate income support and other policy priorities to support people in need to thrive.
