Annual report NSW & ACT 2022
WELCOME
It’s been a tough year with natural disasters, a pandemic environment, increased cost of living and workforce shortages at a time of increased service demand.
I am incredibly grateful for the commitment of our leaders and frontline staff who continued to stand alongside the people we serve, and for the support of our partners, funders and collaborators. Together, we assisted 55,143 people in NSW & ACT through 250 services that enable children, young people, families and communities to find and sustain a safe home, strengthen families and communities and thrive.
There are many wonderful achievements to celebrate over the year, but a few of the highlights:
- Implementing COVID Partnership and Bushfire Community Wellbeing & Participation programs.
- Advocating actively, including through our pre-budget submission to the NSW Government.
- Partnering with Aboriginal community controlled organisations such as Yarruwalla Youth and Family Services in Dubbo to support Aboriginal young people and families through mentoring, fitness and parenting programs.
- Opening the new Mission Australia Centre in Coffs Harbour by the Governor General on 27 February 2022.
- Establishing Transition to Work on the Mid North Coast, to support disadvantaged young people into training and work.
- Commenced community engagement in Northern Sydney to measure wellbeing, resilience and preparedness during natural disasters and extreme weather.
- Significant progress in construction of the alcohol and other drugs residential rehabilitation service in Batemans Bay, due to open next year.
The well-being and development of our people was more important than ever this year. Through our deliberate focus we continue to exceed sector benchmarks in our staff engagement survey results.
I hope you will be inspired by the impact and stories in this year’s report knowing that your support makes this possible. We look forward to another year of assisting people in need together and striving towards an Australia where everyone has a safe home and can thrive.
Warm regards,
Together, we supported 55,143 Australians in NSW & ACT on their journey towards independence last year.

An Australia where all of us can have a safe home and thrive
In 2020, we launched Mission Australia’s 20-25 Strategy with a vision for an Australia where all of us have a safe home and can thrive. In the past year, we are proud of our progress in our four strategic focus areas. From the opening of the Mission Australia Centre in Coffs Harbour to expanding our Alcohol and Other Drugs Facilities in Batemans Bay, read more about our progress here.
Our work in action
Ending homelessness
Thanks to funding from our generous supporters, the new Mission Australia Centre in Coffs Harbour opened in February as part of our ongoing commitment to help people like Ezra on the Mid North Coast have access to the services they need and a safe place to call home.
Strengthening communities
Take a look behind the scenes at our Mission Australia Centre (MAC) in Surry Hills. Thanks to our supporters, the MAC plays a pivotal role in ending homelessness and helping people in Sydney thrive.
Supporting people in need to thrive
When single mother, Jenny lost her job, she hit rock bottom. When no one believed in a better future for Jenny – not even herself—our supporters and staff stood alongside her until she had the confidence and means to stand for herself. Read how we helped Jenny find a safe home and overcome her struggles.
Mission Australia stands together with Australians in need, until they can stand for themselves.
Thank you for making our work possible this year.
Driving excellence
Our Impact Measurement Program helps us understand how our services improve the lives of the people we help and the communities we serve. We measure our impact by asking the people we help questions about their wellbeing when they start a service and when they exit.
Funded by the Department of Communities and Justice (NSW), our Early Intervention and Tenancy Support Service in Southwest Sydney supports adults and families at risk of, and who have recently become, homeless to prevent homelessness before it becomes entrenched. Our impact measurement data shows that when people left the service, they were more satisfied with their personal wellbeing.

Research & advocacy
Mission Australia provided submissions to the NSW Government on a range of issues, including:
- NSW Inquiry into options to improve access to existing and alternate accommodation to address the social housing shortage
- NSW pre-budget consultations
- NSW Flood Inquiry
- NSW Inquiry into homelessness amongst older people aged over 55 in NSW.
Across the state and nationally, we furthered our community collaborations and worked with governments to advocate for our policy priorities to support people in need to thrive.
