Annual report NT 2022
WELCOME
On behalf of the individuals, families and communities we work alongside, I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to our donors, funders, volunteers, partner organisations and staff across the Northern Territory (NT). Your prayers, commitment and unwavering generosity supports our efforts towards a shared vision of an Australia where everyone has a safe home and can thrive.
Whilst it was a challenging year with the COVID-19 pandemic impacting us all, the team persevered and remained steadfast in delivering services to vulnerable people in the NT.
The team had many wonderful achievements over the past year including:
- Establishing Transition to Work services in Darwin to support young people aged 15-24 to gain skills and confidence to find employment or education
- Implementing fundamental improvements to the delivery of services resulting in improved outcomes for people accessing our transitional accommodation services, Aherlkeme Development Centre and Stuart Lodge in Alice Springs
- Establishing new partnerships with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and strengthening existing collaborations to expand the delivery of services and improve outcomes for First Nation peoples.
In addition to these highlights, I have included fantastic stories that I hope will inspire you and demonstrate how your support has resulted in positive impacts on individuals and the community.
We look forward to continuing to grow our impact and I’d like to invite you to journey with us again over the next 12 months.
I hope you enjoy reading the Annual Report.
Warm regards,
Together, we supported 7,664 Australians in NT on their journey towards independence last year.

An Australia where all of us can have a safe home and thrive
In 2020, we launched Mission Australia’s 20-25 Strategy with a vision for an Australia where all of us have a safe home and can thrive. In the past year, we are proud of our progress in our four strategic focus areas. From the opening of the Mission Australia Centre in Coffs Harbour to expanding our Alcohol and Other Drugs Facilities in Batemans Bay, read more about our progress here.
Our work in action
Ending homelessness
Aherlkeme Development Centre (ADC)* in the Nothern Territory helps families escape homelessness and learn independent living skills. Read how they helped Carol and Saul transition from homelessness to a safe home of their own.
Strengthening communities
Partnering with the Binjari Community in the Northern Territory, Mission Australia takes a holistic approach to help people like Dennis break free from dependencies and find the support they need to thrive.
Supporting people in need to thrive
Using creativity and DIY, discover how our residential rehabilitation service, MAARTS, helps vulnerable people overcome substance dependencies in the Northern Territory.
Mission Australia stands together with Australians in need, until they can stand for themselves.
Thank you for making our work possible this year.
Driving excellence
Our Impact Measurement helps us understand how our services improve the lives of the people we help and the communities we serve. We measure our impact by asking questions about an individual’s wellbeing when they start a service and when they exit.
In the Northern Territory, our impact measurement data shows that when people left our services, they were more satisfied with their personal wellbeing.

Research & advocacy
Mission Australia continued our policy and advocacy work to support people in need to thrive. We advocated to the Federal and State Governments on issues of importance to Mission Australia and the people we serve.
We made policy submissions on a range of topics including homelessness, social and affordable housing, and youth.
Across the state and nationally, we met with ministers and senior government representatives on policy priorities for people in need and furthered our community collaborations to advocate together on key issues.
